The UK government will need to provide support to house builders across the country in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is according to Rob Perrins, chief executive of Berkeley, who told the Guardian that, if house builders are given the right support they can help lead the country’s economic recovery following the pandemic and lockdown.

He commented: “This will require government support, similar to that seen following the 2008-9 financial crisis, including: the reversal of property tax increases since 2014, a reduction in the bureaucracy and cost of planning, and direct investment in affordable housing.”

Mr Perrins’ comments come after many leading property and construction firms in the UK signed an open letter to the government, urging it to put the environment front and centre of its efforts to help the country recover following the global pandemic.

The letter, which has been signed by over 200 leading businesses, calls for “a clean, inclusive and resilient recovery from coronavirus”. Members of the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) have signed the letter.

Julie Hirigoyen, chief executive at UKGBC, said: “The built environment can play a pivotal role in helping the country to build back better.”

Among the measures UKGBC is calling for are “ambitious new build standards, prioritising home energy efficiency and investing in urban greening”, Ms Hirigoyen added.
