86% Of Construction Sites Now Open, Figures Show
The majority of construction and infrastructure sites across England and Wales are now open, new figures show, with 86 per cent now back in operation.
Trade body Build UK members are now bringing their workers back from furlough, with 22 per cent of the workforce now furloughed, compared to 30 per cent four weeks ago, PBC Today reports.
Output has also risen to 75 per cent, although it seems as though there are still some challenges in London, with output slightly lower at 68 per cent.
And 67 per cent of housing sites in England and Wales are also now open, with output improving to 65 per cent, up from 29 per cent a month ago. In Scotland, meanwhile, only 19 per cent of projects are now up and running, with output at 22 per cent.
Some eight million people have been furloughed under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, with the government announcing that the online service for the Coronavirus Statutory Sick Pay Rebate Scheme will go live on May 26th.
This means that small and medium-sized enterprises with fewer than 250 staff members will be able to apply to HMRC to recover the costs of paying coronavirus-related statutory sick pay to current or former employees for up to two weeks since March 13th.
Further research, this time from law firm Irwin Mitchell and the Centre for Economics & Business Research, found that the construction industry in the UK is losing £301.5 million a day during lockdown.
